There's Gold in the Hills - Historic Preservation and Affordable Housing                       California Preservation Foundation 2010 Conference

Affordable housing can be an effective economic engine for historic preservation, while at the same time serving other important objectives, including smart
growth, transit-oriented development that is sustainable and enriches the urban fabric, and revitalization of small, Main Street-type cities. This session will cover the financial, public and practical obstacles of creating affordable housing in historic buildings, using several case studies: Sacramento's Globe Mills, that transformed an abandoned industrial (and brownfield) site into a thriving transit-oriented mixed-use, mixed-age and mixed-income community; downtown Stockton's Hotel Stockton, which also transformed a long abandoned and blighted urban treasure into affordable housing, offices and restaurant, and the adaptive reuse of vacant, blighted historic buildings in two small towns: Live Oak and Marysville.
